Avoiding having a marketing email labeled as spam

Marketing emails are wonderful tools for a variety of things, but they can’t work their magic if they never make it to the intended recipients. Spam laws and spam filters ensure that email marketers face an uphill battle when trying to establish themselves as legitimate senders.

How to Deal with Can Spam Act?

When sending a marketing email, it is important to be aware of America’s CAN SPAM Act. The CAN SPAM act was created to decrease the number of unsolicited pornographic emails in specific, and to decrease the amount of spam emails in general. For an email to be legitimate under the Act it must contain a valid subject line, an opt-out feature, an address from the sender, and a clear label should the email contain adult content. There are legal repercussions for sending spam, which can include misdemeanor chargers and fines up to roughly a thousand dollars. Some violators of this law even face hefty prison terms.

To avoid any unfortunate consequences, it is important to be compliant with the Act. There are some programs out there that can check your emails for you, and there are a few things you can check yourself. Be sure your opt-out feature is prominently displayed, tailor your headers to the customer, and, if you feel any of your content is questionable, label it clearly.

Using Opt-in Registration to Avoid Being Labeled as SPAM

Opt-in is another great way to avoid being labeled as spam. With opt-in email marketing, the client chooses to receive your email, and therefore is more likely to respond favorably to it. From the corner store with a handwritten email list to a gigantic company sending out slick electronic newsletters with every purchase, opt-in can be a very valuable tool that can help you avoid blacklisting.

Blacklisting will keep your emails from arriving in the intended recipient’s mailbox, so avoid sending your emails to bad addresses, check your I.P. address for reliability, and send emails only once to an address that responds with a hard bounce. A hard bounce is a permanent error and you will only hurt yourself by re-delivering to such an address.

These tips will start you on the path of being whitelisted everywhere you choose to send your message!
